THE WORD

My God – You’ve changed since I saw you last!

When we meet someone we haven’t seen for a long time, we are usually struck by how they have changed, either in appearance or personality. This is certainly true when the last time we met them was as school mates.

They are still the same person, but our image of them has to change; we have grown as have they. A similar dynamic can occur in our relationship with God. Too often, we can go through our adult life, with the image of God that we held onto as a child. And so very often the God of our childhood may not seem to be able to answer the problems that we experience as an adult.

As with any relationship, be it marriage or friendship, if we do not allow the other person to grow and reveal more of themselves, our relationships can become strained or break all together.

Just as one image of a human person is not adequate to reveal that person so we should also bear in mind that no one image for God is adequate for delving the depths of the Reality to whom we give the name God.   We have always to remember that all the images that we have for God are limited and inadequate, so that it is good to have more than one even if they appear to contradict each other.
